
Dr. Gene Bourgeois earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in history from Louisiana State University, and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Cambridge, Clare College. He joined Texas State University as an assistant professor of history in 1990 and was promoted to professor in 2004. His publications include books and articles on sixteenth-century English history. He teaches a variety of English history courses at the graduate and advanced undergraduate levels.
Prior to becoming the provost, Dr. Bourgeois was appointed director of the Texas State Honors Program in 1996, chair of the Department of History in 2000, associate vice president for academic affairs in 2005, and associate provost in 2006. He also founded and directed the Texas State in England Study Abroad Program during 1992-2000, and served as founding Faculty Coordinator for the Texas State Residential Colleges, among other activities. As associate provost he managed budget and personnel operations for the Academic Affairs division. He has been actively engaged in numerous university committees, councils and task forces, and the Faculty Senate, and recently helped lead the Academic Affairs division’s SACS reaffirmation efforts.
As provost, Dr. Bourgeois serves as the chief academic officer of the university and is responsible for the coordination and quality of the university’s academic and research programs.
Dr. Bourgeois has received awards and recognition for his teaching and professional work, including the 1996 Texas State Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Texas Academic Advising Network’s 2009 Academic Advising Administrator Award.
Dr. Bourgeois is engaged in heritage and cultural tourism and economic development initiatives for the greater San Marcos area.
Dr. Bourgeois is married to Lynne Bourgeois, and they have two children, René Bourgeois and Simone Bourgeois.
